Musculoskeletal ultrasound is the gold-standard first-line imaging modality for a broad range of soft tissue and joint conditions. Unlike MRI, which provides static images, musculoskeletal ultrasound enables dynamic assessment allowing our imaging specialists to evaluate tendons, ligaments, and muscles in real time during active movement, compare both sides simultaneously, and identify pathology that only becomes apparent under functional loading. It is radiation-free, well-tolerated, cost-effective, and can be performed at the point of care within the same appointment as clinical assessment.

At our specialist MSK ultrasound service, our sonographers and orthopaedic consultants use high-frequency linear transducers operating at 12–18 MHz to resolve structures as fine as individual tendon fascicles, small bursal collections, and minor ligament fibre disruptions. Our MSK ultrasound scan service covers the shoulder including rotator cuff, biceps tendon, acromioclavicular joint, and subacromial bursa the knee, including quadriceps and patellar tendons, collateral ligaments, and Baker's cyst assessment, the hip and groin, the ankle and foot, the wrist and hand, and the elbow. Power Doppler imaging is used to quantify neovascularisation in tendinopathic and inflammatory conditions, providing an objective measure of disease activity to guide injection timing and monitor treatment response.

One of the most clinically valuable applications of musculoskeletal ultrasound at our clinic is real-time ultrasound-guided injection enabling our orthopaedic consultants to place corticosteroid, hyaluronic acid, PRP, and hydrodistension injections with verified intra-articular or peri-tendinous accuracy. Studies consistently demonstrate that ultrasound-guided joint ultrasound injection achieves superior placement accuracy compared to landmark-guided techniques, resulting in improved clinical outcomes, reduced post-injection pain flares, and lower complication rates making it the standard of care for all injection therapies delivered at our sports injury ultrasound and MSK imaging service.
