An MSK ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, bursae, and soft tissues. It is completely safe, painless, and produces no radiation. Unlike MRI, ultrasound can assess structures while you move — making it uniquely effective for dynamic soft tissue and tendon assessment.

What to Expect During Your MSK Ultrasound Scan
Consultation
Your specialist discusses your symptoms, medical history, and the area of concern before the scan begins. No preparation is required beforehand.
Positioning
You are positioned comfortably on the examination couch. Loose clothing is recommended for easy access to the area being scanned.
Gel applied
A small amount of warm, water-based gel is applied to the skin over the scan area. This is completely painless and helps conduct the sound waves.
Real-time scanning
The specialist moves a handheld probe gently over the area, viewing live images on a monitor. You may be asked to move the joint during the scan for dynamic assessment allowing us to identify issues that appear only with movement.
Results and treatment plan
Findings are explained to you immediately at the end of the scan. Your specialist recommends next steps whether that is physiotherapy, injection treatment, further imaging, or surgical referral.
